The Snow Girl by Sophie Anderson

As soon as this proof was spotted arriving in a beautiful package, I sent up a wish that I would be lucky enough to receive one. Much like a wish made by our new heroine, Tasha.

Tasha and her parents have moved to live with her Grandpa who is struggling to look after the farm and worries about a harsh winter ahead. Tasha embraces her new life with the animals and her Grandpa but she is reluctant to leave the farm or make new friends. There was an incident before they moved that has changed Tasha. She is now anxious, worried and unable to let herself try new things or make new friends.

When the first snow falls, Tasha and her grandpa build a snow girl and a wish is cast for a friend. As the winter thickens, Tasha and her new friend Alyana have exciting, frozen adventures together with a menagerie of wild animals keeping them company and providing warmth.

Hearing a story about snow spirits, Tasha begins to have small doubts and worries about changes she is noticing in herself. She knows that she must let Alyana go but she doesn’t want to say goodbye to someone she trusts, loves and opens up to. It is with Alyana that those first tentative steps towards healing have finally happened for Tasha.

I found Tasha a wonderful character full of love for her family their farm but also of hopes in finding space for new friends and adventures. As you read, you discover what has caused her to be so anxious and hope that she can find her way.

Sophie Anderson’s tales are steeped in legend, folklore and wintery beauty. The Snow Girl is an exceptional story of friendship, facing fears and feeling a sense of belonging and community.

Sophie Anderson has wowed me again with her wondrous tale!
