This weekly event is always something to look forward to! I am such a big fan of picture books and love discovering what others have been reading and recommending.
This week I am creating an entire blog around #PictureBookFriday featuring two delightful stories from author and illustrator, Katy Hudson.
Mindful Mr Sloth and Waiting for Mr Sloth feature a young and excitable girl called Sasha and Mr Sloth, an animal known for its slow pace.
Sasha likes to be busy, so busy that she rarely takes time to complete one activity before moving on to the next. She moves quickly and tends to trample things in her path to do them. When Mr Sloth falls out of his tree, Sasha is delighted to have a new best friend and immediately takes him outside to play, create and race around the neighbourhood. During the race, Mr Sloth wants to stop and hear the birds sing, smell the flowers and have a moment of calm. Will Sasha be able to slow down and take notice of the world around her? Patience may be Sasha’s middle name but it is not a skill she is able to demonstrate, especially when she is so excited to go swimming with Mr Sloth. Getting ready takes ages, then the pool has a hole and the lake has to be walked to but eventually they arrive, though Sasha is quite hot and cross by this point. While she splashes, Mr Sloth waits and naps and they must make amends for Sasha’s anger. Mr Sloth, wisely teaches Sasha to count, take deep breaths and wait patiently for her plans to fall into place.
Ideal stories for teaching our young readers about mindfulness, patience and relationships between best friends. Sasha and Mr Sloth are different but they learn a lot from each other and have fun together.
These will be gifted to my young god-daughters who love reading stories! Their mum may also appreciate the gentle messaging around kindness, patience and mindfulness.
Thank you to Raintree for these stories and the invitation to get involved with #PictureBookFriday!

I read constantly and have more books than bookshelves, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
I celebrate reading every day at work I am currently Vice Chair on the National Executive Committee for the Federation of Children’s Book Groups!
