Size Wise by Camilla de la Bedoyere and Vasilisa Romanenko, Published by Buster Books
This is a vibrant, colourful and incredible book about animals around the world. With a superb use of size, readers can get a further understanding of how large or small animals, nature and environments can be. Clever use of a symbols let readers know whether things have been zoomed in or out. I think it is worth noting the beautiful detail the illustrator has taken with each illustration. Children will be enraptured with the hands of the gorilla and the head of a giraffe, not to mention the small grains of sand. This is the perfect book to dip in and out of regularly, with plenty of facts to learn and share.
Weird and Wonderful Animals by Ben Rothery, Published by Ladybird Books
Animals are always a draw for readers but when you add weird and wonderful to the mix, then even better. This book is an artistic dream of a book, with illustrations so precise they look like photographs. Readers will be enthralled studying each one for those weird adaptations but also for greater understanding on how these creatures exist in their environment. I spot some of my own favourite animals in the pages, like the giant anteater and axolotl- which are certainly weird. Creator Ben Rothery has an entire collection of books about animals- all worth checking out.
The Observologist by Giselle Clarkson, Published by Gecko Press
This large hardback volume will entice scientific minded readers in immediately with it’s interesting title and cover. Young readers are brilliant at finding the smallest things to explore and this book will further their thinking and investigating. From looking in dark corners to peeking behind curtains, a day becomes more exciting with a quest. With wondrous graphic style illustrations, this book will appeal to a range of ages. Grab a magnifying glass and begin your kit to help you explore the everyday. It has a grown up feel to it which will also appeal to readers. Great for combating boredom!
A History of the World according to Cate by Kimberlie Hamilton and Jocelyn Kao, Published by Scholastic
My daughter loved the Rebel Dog and Rebel Cat books also by the same author so she immediately grabbed this when it arrived. For cat lovers out there this is a fun book to read. Travel throughout time with moggies from history and see how the long relationship between humans and cat have developed over time and culture. These books are so readable and enjoyable, not just for history buffs but for anyone keen to explore new perspectives. The pages are colourful, fun and engaging with cats of all shapes and sizes decorating the space.
Super Sports Stars who are Changing the Game by Rick Broadbent and Alexander Mostov, Published by Walker Books
There are some familiar names and sports in this book along with sports that don’t get huge recognition. The sports stars featured have overcome barriers or challenges to rise to the top of their respected fields, and they have done so with positivity, courage and commitment to their game. Inspiring and informative, I can think of many readers who will find this the perfect book. The illustrations are brilliant and the layout of each double page spread is colourful, full of facts and pleasing to the eye. Dotted throughout the book are tips, activities to try and ways to overcome challenges for the reader to try.
The Mellors Build an Eco House by Robin Jacobs and Nik Neves, Published by Cicada Books
As someone with their house on the market, I can understand how the Mellors felt about looking at houses and then making the decision to build their own. This is a book that walks readers through the stages of building a house, one that has considered the environment and its future. From digging a trench for the foundations to constructing a green roof, the Mellors get stuck in and build their dream house. The use of colour and illustrative style is very appealing for young readers and even the end papers are stylish. What would you add to your dream, eco house? What a brilliant book to spark thinking!
Books and the People Who Make Them by Stéphanie Vernet and Camille de Cussac, Published by Prestel Publishing
This colourful and vibrant book will walk future authors and illustrators through the processes of getting published. Anyone new to publishing will find out about the extraordinary steps that get taken from idea to physical book, and there will certainly be some surprises in store. I love the overall use of white pages and colourful vignettes showing the stages. Short bursts of text make this accessible and easy to read for a larger audience. The longevity of books is celebrated as well, from collectors to libraries to award nominations. I found this fascinating to explore and it is one I will share with young readers hopeful of seeing their story on shelves. Long live books!
