National Non Fiction November is an annual month-long celebration of non fiction titles for children. It is an initiative run by the Federation of Children’s Book Groups, a national charity whose aim is to bring children and books together.
In an effort to get involved, I will share more non-fiction reviews this month!

Having heard of Nina Simone, I admit to not being really familiar with her songs. As soon as I finished reading her story, I made sure to listen to her music. She was soulful and sultry, powerful and thoughtful.
This story is exquisite in its style and illustrations, truly bringing to life the story of this talented and vocal singer and activist. I love that her Daddy taught her jazz but she could quickly switch to a hymn when Mama came home.
Having noticed how talented she was from a very young age, her parents made sacrifices and choices to better Eunice (her name at birth) and allow her to follow her dreams. Unfortunately for the time period she lived through, dreams were not easy for a black woman to have.
I loved learning how she used her voice as a way of protesting and as a way of offering hope and love to the future generations to follow her. This is an incredible book and one that young readers will find fascinating.
