Stones and Bones by Rob Wilshaw

National Non Fiction November is an annual month-long celebration of non fiction titles for children. It is an initiative run by the Federation of Children’s Book Groups, a national charity whose aim is to bring children and books together.

In an effort to be more involved, I plan to post more non fiction reviews this month.

Fossils are fascinating for many young readers and we often first encounter them in museums where they can be viewed through windows and displays. It can be hard to imagine just how these are formed.

In Stone and Bones, we take an historical journey back through the time periods and discover how a fossil is formed and the many layers protecting them until discovery.

Along the journey, we also learn more details about specific creatures of those times. I like that this book doesn’t aim to overwhelm with information but provides enough to be factual and informative and allows young readers a chance to explore further on their own.

The research into the time periods for both the facts and the brilliant illustrations were clearly worth it as this book is an incredible resource on the topic of fossils!
