Shadowhall Academy by Phil Hickes

The biscuits were definitely appreciated and are such a staple of a boarding school story!

Aveline Jones is a favourite series of mine. It is spooky, thrilling and haunting, all the right pieces for a perfect Autumn puzzle.

Discovering a new book by a favourite author is always exciting and when I picked this up, the hours quietly melted away as I joined Lilian, Serena, Maz and Angela for the new school term at Shadowhall Academy.

Set in the Suffolk countryside, where I live, I can almost picture this eerie place. Suffolk is renowned for its myths and legends so this fits in perfectly. The school is gothic, symbolic and filled with dark wood panelling and creaky old staircases and floors.

Lilian Jones (any relation to Aveline?) is attending Shadowhall for the first time and she quickly finds her feet with her new roommates, even when she is told a haunting story about the resident ghost, Cold Mary. This haunting tale reverberates throughout all Lilian does and she begins to make connections with other tragedies linked to the house.

With the help of her roommates, Lilian embarks on a mission of discovery, with some thrilling and dangerous escapades. I loved the haunting quality to this tale and am hopeful the next book in the series arrives quickly as I am keen to head into another term with this group of friends.

My acceptance letter is brilliant and I am keen to get started, though I am not as brave as Lilian!
