Stitch by Pádraig Kenny

This is a unique story, taking a familiar legend and turning it into something very special.

Stitch is formed of varying body parts and lives in a castle with the Professor and his friend Henry, also formed of various parts though larger and more likely to cause terror and trouble.

Stitch counts the days he wakes as well as the amount of days since the professor told him he wasn’t to be disturbed. Both are numbers in the hundreds…but Stitch takes things entirely literally.

When the professor’s nephew arrives, the professor’s demise is accounted for and life takes on a difficult and different path for Henry, Stitch and Alice. She has been “adopted” by the professor’s nephew but doesn’t approve of his thinking or treatment of others.

When the nephew wants to experiment on Henry, both Stitch and Alice stop things and run away to find Henry. Stitch has always wanted to be an explorer and they take advantage of their freedom to do just that.

They inevitably run into trouble but Stitch has goodness running through him entirely and even when faced with horrors, he feels a sense of doing the right thing.

Acceptance, differences and friendship are celebrated throughout this wonderful story.

The author has a sense of the macabre from all his stories and these are written with beauty and a sense of wonder.
