I have always been fascinated by a time period beset with highwaymen and the ruthless attempts to steal from the rich. At times, these stories are violent and terrifying but in this story of Diamond Jack, we see a different band of highwaymen.
However, our story begins in an emporium with Bramble preparing for the day. Her sister is away and her grandfather is out running errands. She and bestie, Ernest are investigating a “pull” that Bramble is feeling, a pull that leads them to the shed. A shed she is forbidden from entering but something about being left alone has bolstered her bravery.
When she discovers a scarlet mask, she wonders why it was hidden and how it seemed to be calling to her. Happening upon a mirror, she finds herself eye to eye with Diamond Jack, the most notorious highwayman around. One who steals from the rich to give to the poor. The mask won’t come off and Bramble is left reeling when she spots a spy looking in at her.
All that happens from that point put Bramble, her friends and family in danger from The Rippers, a notoriously violent and ruthless gang of highwaymen. Secrets will find their way out, families will make tough decisions and wrongs will be put right.
I found I couldn’t stop reading this story, the characters coming off the page so real and brilliant. What an epic tale!
