This story takes me back to my years spent in Hong Kong and the auspicious nature of Chinese people around legends. Zhi Ging is desperate to become a silhouette, one who undertakes a series of challenges to then be admitted to the Cyo B’Ahon, the immortals. Immortals can live forever in Hok Woh.
When someone else from her province is chosen as Silhouette, Zhi Ging begs to be counted as a second but this is unheard of. When faced with incredible danger from a dragon attack, a spirit is summoned and Zhi Ging escapes but she is now labelled dangerous and is no longer safe in her province. Reishi, a Cyo B’Ahon takes her to the Floating Market and there she is given the chance to become a Silhouette, taking it.
At Hok Woh, the others are not all friendly but she does find friends. What she also finds is a duckling and secrets.
This is a unique tale, one steeped in legend and that makes you feel a part of the world where Zhi Ging lives. I loved the references to food, your mouth will water but also the creatures, themes and characters. They all leap off the page.
Unique and brilliant!
