Magicalia by Jennifer Bell

This is a fantastical story that is full of imagination. It begins with Bitsy and Kosh getting ready for a sleepover when a giant purple hamster with a rhino horn eats her laundry. Not quite sure what is happening she heads down to find her Dad arguing with a severe looking woman demanding a book.

After several intense and chaotic moments, Bitsy discovers that her dad has been kidnapped. Somehow, his pen conjured a small creature that leads them to a cabinet hiding a secret room. Here is where the adventure heightens and takes flight.

Bitsy and Kosh head to London for answers to their million questions and find a cosmodian, someone who guides young Conjurers. Giverna helps them to understand more about what they saw in Bitsy’s house, but when they head back later they find a stranger and a ransom note. This leads Kosh and Bitsy on a treasure hunt for an ancient artefact, one that has power that can change the world. More determined to use it to save her father, they head off using some imaginative modes of transport.

They never seem to be alone and can’t quite figure out how they are being followed…

What I love most about this book is the creatures. It feels a bit like Pokemon mixed with HP petronus’s. A mix of small, medium and large creatures that are conjured using memories and emotions. Each has a special skill that can help. As Bitsy and Kosh work together they realise they both have special abilities and use these to their advantage.

Brilliantly imagined and written, this is a top pick for me this year already. Within a page, I was hooked and had to devour it in one sitting! And it looks as though there are more books to come in the series!
