The Golden Hare by Paddy Donnelly, Published by O’Brien Press
Paddy Donnelly is one of my favourite author-illustrators and any new book is an automatic must read. We first met Meara and her grandad in The Vanishing Lake. Here we meet them again as they head off on an adventure and a hunt for the golden hare. Generational, heartwarming and filled with incredible details, Paddy’s stories resonate with readers and allow them to feel a part of nature and the world around them. Meara discovers so much about her world, her family and herself in this story.
When I Feel Brave by Britta Teckentrup, Published by Prestel
When I feel Brave is a follow up book to When I See Red, a popular book exploring emotions. The use of simple rhymes and bold use of text size brings to light the fear felt by the young girl. As the reader, you can feel this fear directly. When she is faced with the bear, her strength and courage appear giving her the chance to face her fear. Over the rest of the story, the pair travel together. Fear and courage go hand in hand and it’s a valuable lesson to learn.
I Can Do that Too by Britta Teckentrup, Published by Prestel
Little Hedgehog and Big Hedgehog are exploring all the fallen leaves and keeping busy. Little Hedgehog likes to copy and do what the other do. “I can do that too” is a repeated phrase throughout this story. Britta Teckentrup is a talented author and illustrator and her well-known style is a delight to study. Little Hedgehog takes a few big risks leaving Big Hedgehog a little breathless but they have an eventful day and tiredness is inevitable.
Can I Sit in the Middle? By Susanne Straser, Published by Gecko Press
This joyous story is one of familiarity if you have ever started to get ready for a story. Someone wants to get a blanket, or a snack or to sit in the middle. As the group prepare for their story, it is one thing after another which delays the start. It’s such a fun story, simply told and wonderfully illustrated. I think everyone will relate to this and find it fun to read. A fun ending will make every reader smile!

A charming story of “the most amazing thing” but poor Henry just doesn’t know what that is! His family are very busy and Henry is bored. His mum asks him to draw the most amazing thing so Henry goes in search of this. His family believe that life, the mind or the universe are all amazing but Henry isn’t sure he agrees! When he asks his mum, she enlightens him and he finally understands. Lovely and thought provoking, what do you think is the most amazing thing?
