I had no expectations with this book and hadn’t read many reviews so it was a joy to begin fresh. It begins with Kam, her relay track team, best friend Odie, and a visit from her Aunt Rose.
Kam doesn’t handle change well- she needs information and time so when things all come together at the same time, she finds it hard to focus and concentrate.
She needs to write a chant for her relay team to help them win! She and Odie have stopped talking but she isn’t entirely sure why and her Aunt from Tanzania is coming to stay. Kam has never met her aunt but they will be sharing a room. Dealing with that on top of intense practice, school and writing is too much.
Over the course of the story, you see Kam change and become calmer. Listening to Aunt Rose tell stories and offer advice is wonderful, even as the reader. Seeing the impact she has on the entire family is heartwarming.
I could not stop reading this, even though it went late into the evening. I needed to see this through, to know what happens and to absorb all of Aunt Rose’s brilliance for myself.
Joyous and heartwarming- this is a must read!
