Race to Imagination Island by Mel Taylor-Bessent

Luca is a worrier, anxious and unsure of most things. He gets teased by his family, has very few friends and struggles with change and noise. As we meet Luca and his many siblings, they are all out looking for the lightning stream that will take them to Imagination Island.

A competition has been launched to find the new four protectors of the island and 16 children can join the race. When Luca tires of the teasing, he walks away and it is there where he finds the very lightning stream that he is worried he will find. While trying to avoid the siblings who are running towards it, Luca is whisked away to join the race.

As the final child to arrive, the race begins quickly and they must all adapt to this island where imaginations need to run wild. There is a vast range of characters to meet, some awesome like Grayson, and others with hugely competitive streaks like Tiago.

Discovering their teams, choosing names and getting to know each other is just the beginning. Each team must play to their strengths and use only 3 imagines, or ways to help them compete in this phase of the race.

Luca is just desperate to get home and tries to wish himself away but over the course of the race, he is discovering how nice it is to have friends, be part of a team and to join in. Things he never did at home. Does he really want to leave?

Such a strong start to a daring new series. I loved the character cards at the front and back of the book- so helpful as you read the story. Truly fun, imaginative and engaging!

My only complaint is that part one of the race is complete and I am in desperate need to read more! Just how long do I need to wait?
