I think, after reading the book, and Ian’s notes and dedication at the back, that this might be the most personal and heartfelt story he has written.
Stemming from personal experiences and a difficult loss in recent years, you can feel the emotions coming through the main character Richard and his story.
It’s compelling to read about OCD and the characteristics associated with it, not to mention the reasons people have to repeatedly do an action or activity, it comes from a place of protection and saving those they love.
Richard and his mum have moved in his grandmothers home after her passing and it isn’t a place of happy memories for his mum. They are both struggling to cope and adapt to this new house. There is a past his Mum is not yet ready to deal with and hints of issues with Richard and his OCD being hard for them both.
Richard becomes convinced there is a ghost living in his wardrobe and when someone tries to get him to face his fears, the ghost floats out and threatens Richard. It continues to do so and Richard needs to take action but he will need to believe in himself first.
No one believes his story and his new friends fall out with him. How can he overcome his fears and face the ghost? Can he make his mum understand what is happening?
I was really moved by this story and loved the messaging. I also loved the book recommendations in the form of Amelia’s reading choices- some favourites in there for me! Mei’s quick wit and Quinn’s jokes also add a super dynamic to this friendship group.
