What an extraordinary story with two wonderfully courageous children. Yakov and Skylar both struggle with school and making friends- but for very different reasons. Yakov has come to England after escaping war. Skylar is unique and doesn’t want to talk about hair and makeup. They each become solitary figures in school until their lives are thrown together in a wonderful way.
They both look across to the golden island, rumoured to have a colourful history and a rich eco system. Also rumoured to be owned by a ruthless man. When a sign appears saying there is a chance to win the island, both Yakov and Skylar know, for their own reasons, that they must win.
Both being very young and supposed to be in school, their lies eventually catch up with them and they almost miss their chance to go through to each round. Jasper and husband Bruno are the owners of the island and are hoping for just the right winners.
What no one accounts for is attempted murder, secret tunnels and two brave determined children.
I could not part ways with this adventure once I started, as is true with all Natasha Farrant’s books. They all have such brave children, heartfelt moments of realisation and an environmental theme woven throughout. Mixed in are plot twists and daring moments where bravery is much needed.
A phenomenal story!
