Shadow Creatures by Chris Vick

We know so much about WWII now and history has had a huge impact on those who discover the horrors of the war, but it also shines a light on those who were unwilling to bow to the Nazis and their horrific treatment of people.

Set in Norway, we meet a small community who are preparing for the arrival of German soldiers. They send their valuables away to a nearby island and the men escape to fight. Women and children remain and try to survive the long years of starvation, uncertainty, worry and fear.

Tove, Liva, Agna and Haaken each do what they can to help the Milorg, the resistance movement in Norway. Every step they take is filled with danger and they all soon discover just how dangerous the Reich is and perhaps how quickly they can discover truths thought to be buried deep.

This story is one that will glue you to your seat and perhaps inspire you to discover more about the role Norway played in the war and how they survived and fought back.

I was enthralled by the varying narrators of this story so you could see many perspectives and see the sacrifices each one had to make in order to survive.  It also helped to put together pieces of the same story.

Chris Vick writes with such power and I have yet to read one of his books without an emotional reaction. This would be a brilliant read aloud for a class studying WWII.
