Letty and the Mystery of the Golden Thread by Penny Boxall

What a brilliant story and characters! As soon as I started reading, I knew this was going to be a special book, one that I would struggle to put down and I was happily proved right.

Meeting Letty and discovering her story and then following her on an adventure was the perfect way to spend an evening. Letty has been adopted by Joshua Breech, a scholar and he has taught her many things and languages. She is precocious, determined and clever, but not very worldly.

When her father announces that he will no longer be displaying one of the most famous artefacts in their museum there is outrage from other scholars. On the heels of this announcement comes the introduction to Phineas, a man claiming to be Joshua’s true son and heir.

However, what really happens is that Joshua is falsely accused of forging the artefact and is sent to gaol. Letty must go on her grand tour with just a few clues from her father and nothing else. Luckily, she meets Gio, who takes her under his wing and helps her on her adventure and journey through Europe. They meet some spectacular people and see incredible sights but Letty is constantly worried about her father as well as the discoveries she is making at every turn.

Can she get home with the truth in time to save her father? Can she trust everyone or indeed, anyone?

A truly brilliant adventure with interesting facets of history and family thrown in.
