This is an extraordinary story and one that I was completely drawn into. I couldn’t foresee what was coming and the ending just makes me hope that Jacob North is already writing a sequel.
Oswin has been labelled a stray, someone who doesn’t belong and isn’t wanted. When he finally gets a chance to become an Ice Apprentice, he can’t actually believe it and he takes nothing for granted. He has lived a very sheltered life on the ice with his adoptive mother and she is cruel, not allowing his insatiable curiosity to be sated.
Finding his feet at initiation is difficult as his name betrays his “stray-ness” to the other first years. Being back with his brother more than makes up for the side glances from the others.
Throughout this first year, Oswin will deal with monsters, spells, hatred and betrayal. He will also use his incredible senses and goodness to help and save others at the sacrifice of his own potential. He will take great risks and discover the power of having a friend.
I found this to be exciting and unique- there is nothing quite like this out there. I truly hope to meet Oswin again in the future.
