This series set in and around Bletchley Park during World War II is phenomenal and awe-inspiring. In this, the third book, we get to know Mary more and see where the war work takes her.
Initially evacuated to Bletchley from her home in Liverpool, she now finds herself embroiled in several top secret missions. Still away from her family and now her friends, she has learned to go where she is told and to listen, learn and report back all she hears and discovers.
When she is enrolled in a secret language school learning Japanese, she cannot possibly imagine where her war work will lead her. Mary is incredibly smart and she picks up the Japanese language quickly, putting her at the top of her class, the only girl in the room. When she is quickly summoned back to Bletchley and then onto London, she can’t quite believe it.
Mary works closely with an American boy, Spencer, and the words, “Trust No One” constantly come to her, especially when they need to listen to German prisoners dining at the Ritz Hotel. Their aim is to treat them well so they share secrets. Spencer and Mary work well together but it isn’t until a deadly plot to kill Churchill and the King, that the two put their trust into each other to try to save the day.
I imagine anyone reading these books will look up Bletchley Park and want to visit- I certainly do. Women and children, thought to be less important for the war work have proven they should never have been underestimated. This series is a fantastic look at spies and how seemingly small bits of information could come together to help the Allies take control.
Fantastic characters and rapport between Mary and Spencer! I could happily read books like this all the time!
