Best of All Worlds by Kenneth Oppel

Ever since discovering The Boundless by the same author, I was keen to read more. Guppy Books kindly sent Best of all Worlds my way and I devoured it this afternoon.

Gripping, intriguing and offering plenty of discussions, this is one for 12+ to sink their teeth into. Xavier is visiting the family cottage with his Dad and step mum, Nia and is excited to play D&D online with his friends. When he wakes the next day, he has no wifi which is annoying but he soon discovers their entire cottage has been moved to a different location, in the middle of a farm.

Caleb, Nia and Xavier discover small triangular markings on their back, a translucent dome around them and no contact with the outside world…where are they? Why have they been moved? What about their friends and family?

Over the course of the story, three years pass and Xavier has a little brother and is adept at managing the farm. One night he finds that a new house and farm have been built just waiting for another family to arrive.

The Jackson’s arrive and are welcomed and information is shared about what Xavier and his family believe have happened. The Jackson’s have very different viewpoints and it causes tension, serious enough to divide the families.

The story is heart pounding, and mind blowing in equal measure. It deals with some firmly held opinions that will create some interesting table discussions and that may challenge how the reader continues to view this story.

Settle in for your stay in the Dome and let me know your own thoughts!
