Wiggling Words by Kate Rolfe, Published by Two Hoots
Kate Rolfe has brought her dyslexia to life in this relatable story about jiggling, wiggling words! Her love of stories and words shines through and offers hope for others who struggle to read easily. The illustrations are pure genius as she plays, not only with words but with letters as well. Each page is cleverly crafted and designed. I love the use of simple design to highlight the letters and words that Kate is climbing as the main character! A brilliant book!
The Golden Hare by Paddy Donnelly, Published by O’Brien Press
Paddy Donnelly has this incredible talent for creating mythical tales set in nature! Meara and her grandad are back in this story as they set out to discover the Golden Hare but also the treasures to be found in nature. Their special relationship has kept me reading through Paddy’s books. Stunning illustrations will keep the reader discovering small details and perhaps inspire them to head into nature themselves. I love Meara’s enthusiasm and imagination but also this deep love she has for her grandad and his patience in answering all her questions.
A Day with the Artist by Nia Gould, Published by MomBooks
Famous artists and their masterpieces are brought to life for the younger reader in this unique and beautiful book. Each artist appears as an animal, from the lion version of Da Vinci to Kahlo the cat, which allows children to enjoy this book in a different way. As you discover some brilliant facts about each artist, you then turn the page to get a glimpse into their studios and famous artworks. Full colour and wondrous illustrations fill each page and I was drawn to the search and find element on each page. A brilliant introduction to art and artists!
Doctor Fairytale by Catherine Jacob and Hoang Giang, Published by Walker Books
This is a lovely story, with a few twists on fairytales that we love so much. Doctor Fairytale has a busy day of visiting patients, offering treatments and helping favourite characters out! While the rain pours down, she visits and makes the characters feel better until she gets home with a chill herself. Luckily Mum and the other patients have come to the rescue and get her tucked up in bed. A sweet story of caring for others and being a friend to those in need.
Fairy Shopping by Sally Gardner, Published by Zephyr
Originally published decades ago, it is being brought back to life in hardback for a new generation of reader. What makes this book so special are the tiny details and incredible amount of fairytales and special characters on display on every page. Turning the page is quite a delight and young readers will be challenged to spy different items on each page. There is something new to discover every time you read this again. It’s so lovely to see it being published again!
PicoPaco, The Woodpecker who built a town by Mocculere, Published by Flying Eye Books
This is a beautiful story, both in text and illustration. PicoPaco is a woodpecker who likes peace, quiet and order to her life. She finds the noise of the woodpeckers to be overwhelming. When a storm hits and several birds find themselves homeless, Picopaco’s expertise is required to help get new houses built. It’s a delightful story of PicoPaco making use of her talents but also admitting she needs help in knowing where to begin. A great celebration of working together!
Kwesi and Nana Ruby learn to Swim by Kohima Commeh and Bárbara Quintino, Published by Barefoot Books
A wondrous and heartwarming story of facing one’s fears and helping others to do the same. Kwesi wants to be able to play with his friends in the water but can’t swim and he discovers his Nana can’t either. Nana tells Kwesi about Mami Wata, a West African legend and they draw on her song to help them dip a toe into the pool. It’s such a wonderful story that deals sensitively with issues around segregation and cultural reasons why Nana never learned to swim. When we see them swimming together at the end, it’s a lovely ending!
