School of Doom by Sarah Harrison

This is a debut novel from Sarah Harrison, she won the Times/Chicken House Children’s Fiction Competition in 2022 and here we are on the blog tour! Congratulations Sarah!

Eddie eats everything from pencils to plates and even occasionally, wheelie bins. She is not quite fit for the human world but when she is admitted to The School of Doom, she is not quite sure she fits there either. It takes some time and a plot to kill her before she truly finds her feet and her friends- as well as her true inner power.

Her friends are as unique as she is with their own abilities and while there are other, better schools- something they all have in common is their differences to their families. They aren’t the baddest or most evil- they have good in them.

While this group of students finds their way in this new school, there is a plot to close the school from the unpleasant Helen Smith, a school inspector and arch nemesis of Principal Drazora.

This book has some lovely heartwarming moments along with the humour needed to balance the evil and good fighting for place in the story. Eddie is a superb character and I immediately liked her and her strength!

A fantastic debut! I can’t wait to see if there may be more from this group of characters or something entirely new from Sarah.
