This lovely stack of graphic novels would suit KS1 classrooms but likely will appeal to a larger age range of children as well.
The Floofs, Reach for the Stars by Penelope O’Neill, Published by Frances Lincoln
Meet the Floofs, a unique set of imaginative characters in their first book! Bright and beautiful illustrations bring to life the surreal setting and wonderful Floofs. Within this book are three short tales introducing the reader to the wise, kind and magical adventures of the Floofs. This series is all about friendship, magic and working together. The book begins with a map, which I think all books should, followed by little introduction cards to the seven Floofs! My favourite might be Bean, who loves reading!
Mission Impossible-hole by Ben Sanders, Published by Little Tiger
This is the third in this boldly illustrated series! Book one was bright red, book two was bold blue and now this is neon green. This colourful approach plus the play on words make this so engaging and appealing! There are plot holes and twists and plenty of humour for a wide range of ages. This might be the funniest one yet, moving from one plot hole to another with a brilliant “whack-a-mole” element as well. Agent Harrier is a brilliant character- funny and loyal to his cause!
Supa Nova by Chanté Timothy, Published by Nosy Crow
Supa Nova is a new graphic novel series to look forward to! Nova is a scientist and is inspired to help solve the ocean’s plastic island issue. She creates Chomp, a plastic eating creature but Chomp grows and grows becoming an issue in himself. Nova must solve one issue before she can help with the greater one. A delightful new heroine and graphic novel series. This is sure to inspire budding young activists and scientists of all ages! I loved the family dynamic and secret lab in the basement! A brilliant start to the series!
Blue, Barry & Pancakes by Dan Abdo and Jason Patterson, Published by Rock the Boat
This is the second book in this series and is as funny and silly as the first! Blue, Barry and Pancakes live in the same building and all have a great friendship, but different interests. While Blue and Barry are keen to enjoy a quiet afternoon, Pancakes is keen to play with her rocket. Dragging her friends along, they all end up on Balloonia, an invented planet. They must battle their way home and it is truly funny! Bright, colourful and heartwarming- perfect for young graphic novel fans!
DadBot by Jack Noel, Published by Piccadilly
Meet Daisy, Josh and DadBot! It’s the summer holidays and Josh and Daisy are bored! Mum and Dad are working but manage to take the kids to a car boot sale. Trouble follows but Josh’s quick thinking buys them a broken robot. Later, at home, the robot comes to life, much to the joy of the kids. However, Doctor Egg, the true inventor wants his robot back and will stop at nothing! Hilarious, brilliantly illustrated and entertaining. Boredom has no place here!
Pluto Rocket, Joe Pidge Flips a Lid by Paul Gilligan, Published by Pushkin Books
This is the second book in this series featuring Joe and Pluto! Pluto is learning all about what makes someone special from Joe Pidge, the coolest pigeon in town. Filled with brilliant and colourful illustrations and plenty of humour and discoveries, this will be a very popular series with KS1. Their friendship is great to feel a part of through their adventures. Pluto’s honesty and energy in learning about Joe’s world is so much fun to read!
