A few weeks ago, I watched the Usborne showcase event which was hosted by Emma Swan. She was talking about her debut mystery series, Cruise Ship Kid, and I immediately wanted to read it.
When it arrived, I was over the moon and it didn’t take me long to hop on board with Silver and discover what her life is like living on the ship with her mum, the deputy cruise director.
Interspersed with the story, Silver asks for advice and asks questions with space on the pages for the reader to write. It’s a clever and interactive element to the book, one that is sure to engage readers!
Silver is a funny character, keen to find a BFF, and her main group of friends are The Gang, a group of Octogenarians and older who also live on board. They do lots of things together but when Yana boards, Silver is keen to impress her.
Yana is one of those popular girls! It doesn’t all go to plan but when Yana’s uncle and his girlfriend lose their very expensive watches, Silver wants to solve the crime. She doesn’t always get it right and is heavily influenced by Yana, and while her between the ears voice is telling her off, in her keenness to make a friend, she doesn’t follow the ships rules.
Will Silver be able to solve the mystery? Will she make a friend?
This is a cracking debut with a whole host of fantastic characters. I am already eagerly awaiting book two! At times hilarious and at others heartwarming, this is a fantastic start to a new series.
