Picture Book Perfect

Sometimes humour is just what’s needed in a picture book! These are excellent books for sharing and reading aloud!

The Adventures of Alex the Pirate by Tom Oldaker, Published by Rowan Vale Books
This is a clever book designed to allow children to imagine being a pirate while playing games and using their imagination. The games inside are easily explained and use little equipment or items that can be substituted for household items, making it inclusive and accessible for all readers. Starting with a story and immersing in a pirate world will help readers imagine it more clearly during the games. A delightful book!
Don’t Trust Fish by Neil Sharpson and Dan Santat, Published by Andersen Press
This is a cleverly written book that is sure to have readers giggling. What begins as a non-fiction book quickly turns into an absurd tirade against fish! It’s hilarious and brilliantly illustrated and may have you sneaking suspicious glances at your goldfish. When you get to the end and discover the truth, you will laugh even harder. I think this will be excellent for readers of a variety of ages!
What’s that Noise by Charlie Hinson and Nadia Shireen, Published by Simon & Schuster
Another creative book designed to allow children to use their imagination and have fun with a box. Bob has a box and fills it with favourite items, such as his cat, a car and his cap. These are noisy items but when anyone comes close, they all go quiet. Bob keeps adding noisy and fun items to keep him company. It’s a delightful story filled with amazing illustrations. After reading, I guarantee you will need a box to play in!
Ten Whizzy Racers Chaos at Crackling Creek by Timothy Knapman and Richard Merritt, Published by Ladybird
An exciting race through Fairytale Forest, with familiar fairytale characters. The race begins but chaos quickly ensues and racers are taken out of the race for a hilarious variety of reasons. The detailed and vibrant illustrations bring the readers into the race so they can discover who will win. Rhyming and rollicking text make this a joyous read aloud for families. A cracking story with a plethora of characters with a villain keen to win the next race.
The Tractor has a Wobbly Wheel by Tim Saunders and Carla Martell, Published by Allen & Unwin
This is a cracking, rollicking story full of chaos on the farm with a wobbly tractor wheel. Rhyming and funny, what happens when there are constant issues with the wheel? Hilarity! The repetition and building of the story is perfect for young readers and a fun challenge to read aloud. The illustrations are truly brilliant with a host of animals taking part in fixing the tractor! A hilarious ending will have readers wanting more.
A Mouse Just Ate My House by Kes Gray and Sebastien Braun, Published by Happy Yak
A funny, laugh out loud, chaotic story of one mouse with an insatiable appetite. When a mouse begins eating a house from the inside out, the young boy is desperate to find a solution to this problem but the mouse eats more and more, including the solutions to the mouse problem. With die cut pages, rhyming text and superb illustrations, this is sure to be a firm favourite with readers of all ages! It’s an absolute delight with a surprise ending.
