A Girl’s Guide to Spying by Holly Webb

Phyl and Annie join the Girl Guides after seeing them March through their neighbourhood one afternoon. With their shorter skirts and wide hats, they were being mocked by some boys but Phyl stood up to them showing her courageous spirit.

Phyl at fourteen is keen to do more for the war effort especially with her brother wounded and missing in Belgium. Annie at ten thrives on Guides. When Phyl is encouraged to join as a messenger at Watergate House, she is expected to fill inkwells, dust rooms and run messages but she soon finds a full on mystery to investigate.

When Captain Warren, a horrible grumpy man, goes missing, Phyl begins to put clues together and finds out more than she bargained for. Phyl is incredible smart and logical and leads her Guides patrol and coworkers on a special mission that not even the Special Branch are able to figure out.

Such a charming story of Girl Guides in the war and the perceptions of many around working girls and women. The girls in this story are smart, capable and perfect for the war effort.

Loved this one and hope it becomes a series- there is so much more to come from these characters, and Hector of course!
