We are often looking for high quality books for younger readers that are bold, colourful and filled with an epic story and brilliant illustrations. This group of books is perfect for readers wanting more from their stories.
Unicorns in Uniforms: The Yeti’s Sneeze by Tracy Curran and Steve Wood, Published by Fox and Ink Books
This is the second in the series and we first met Blaze, the firefighter. Now we are introduced to Sunny from air and mountain rescue. These books pack a punch of colour, fact and adventure. Readers will get to know the characters, their important jobs and some of the kit they use in the field to help animals and save lives. What happens when a blizzard hits? Well, it’s up to Sunny to determine the right course of action to save lives on the mountain. I think this is a fantastic series and I always look forward to the next Unicorn in Uniform!
The Moonlight Mystery Agency The Puzzling Paw Prints by Vashti Hardy and Agnes Saccani, Published by Barrington Stoke
Another second in a series, this charming story reunites us with Hana and mystery talking cat, Ace. They pair up together one midnight to visit Moonlight, where they help creatures. Hana is feeling worried about starting school the next day and her midnight adventure may just help her feel better. She needs to solve the mystery of the paw prints and growling that some trolls are worried about. These are brilliantly accessible and delightful for younger readers.
Wands Away!: Learning to Fly by Emma Farrarons, Published by Simon & Schuster
Ramona Spellstar is starting Wands Away School and it’s a big step for a nervous young witch. She has a lot to learn but this first experience is delightful as she meets new friends and explores the friendly forest. There is much to learn! This first in the series allows the reader to collect their first badge with Ramona- her flight badge. The next book will be a different badge to earn. Charming spots of colour throughout make this a special book to read and enjoy.
Grimogen Darkstar, Bat-Cat-Tastrophe by Emma Finlayson-Palmer, Published by Tiny Tree Books
This is a super book for Autumn, perfectly spooky but with a dash of friendship and desperation to prove readiness for a pet! Grimogen is so keen to have a pet but she must prove she is responsible. When a trip to the rescue centre goes a bit wrong, Grimogen feels despondent. A little bat-cat has caught her heart and she loves “Lu”. A surprise awaits Immi the next day as her friends arrive to share the surprise. A brilliant book for creature loving readers with fun illustrations throughout.
Watts & Whiskerton, Sabotage at the Fete Cake Bake by Meg McLaren, Published by Piccadilly Press
Most people know that I love mysteries and I like that authors and publishers are making this genre really accessible for younger readers. This is the second in the series and it’s delightful from start to finish. Watts is visiting Whiskerton Manor and he and friend, Pearl, stumble into a mystery involving sabotage! The pair must work together solving clues, finding evidence and putting it altogether to discover the truth. Brilliant illustrations and speech bubbles make this a fun and engaging story.
The Winter Snow Goose by Gill Lewis and Irina Avgustinovich, Published by Barrington Stoke
There are already several of this series available to read so I was delighted to find this new title! This is a wonderful series set on an island with Tia and Nat, living there with their families. When a snow goose is found injured on the nature reserve, the whole community comes together as it heralds a fierce winter for them all. The sense of community, simplicity and being there for everyone is so brilliantly shared in this series. The illustrations are stunning making this a favourite series of mine!
