Years ago, these books would have been wrapped and added to my book advent for my kids. Now they are older teens, this tradition has ended but I still adore reading them and sharing them with younger children.
Tomorrow is December 1, the beginning of advent and our climb to the big day. My whole family love this part of the season and we tend to do more in the days ahead than on the day itself.
These six books are perfect for sharing, reading aloud and then doing it again, night after night!
A Christmas Delivery by Andy Shepherd and Sarah Warburton, Published by Templar Books
What a joyous story! Filled with heart, imagination and a sprinkling of magic, this is sure to become a Christmas classic. It will also springboard new readers onto the series from the same brilliant author. Dragons capture imagination and the ones you meet in this story, while mischievous, are also loving and helpful. It’s a beautiful story of working together to bring joy to others in this festive season. What happens when Lolli makes a wish for snow, just as the dragon-fruit is about to hatch? Chaos, fun and magic! It makes me want to re-read the series this holiday!
The Street Where Santa Lives by Harriet Howe and Julia Christians, Published by Little Tiger
When a new neighbour moves in, one who looks a lot like Santa, a young girl is determined to discover the truth. As “Santa” settles in to his new home, he is peppered with questions about his favourite food, animals and season. When the neighbours discover his knack for fixing and mending things, the girl is even more convinced it’s Santa. This comes in handy when “Santa” finds himself in need of help while he is unwell. The neighbours gather together and ensure he has all he needs. Such a heartwarming tale of coming together to help others.
Supertato, We wish you a Veggie Christmas by Sue Hendra and Paul Linnet, Published by Simon & Schuster
Supertato, Evil Pea and the Veggies are back for another epic adventure. When Christmas becomes too much for Evil Pea, he hatches a plan to cancel Christmas and keep all the goodies for himself. With a handy shrinking machine, Supertato and the Veggies find themselves tiny and hanging from the tree. Evil Pea is getting away and the Veggies need to work together to stop this dastardly plan. Another hilarious adventure in the seasonal aisle at the supermarket. Supertato is such a popular series and I always love reading these ones aloud.
Your Greatest Gift by Katie Piper and Tilia Rand-Bell, Published by Starshine Books
It is easy to get caught up in the stress of gift giving at Christmas and this book may be the needed balm for that stress. A delightful and heart filled story of giving and how that makes Teeny Mouse feel. There is no doubt that giving a gift to a loved one brings joy to both and this story will help younger readers discover this. Wondrous illustrations and simple gifts made with love may just inspire gift giving this year. This is one to add to you giving lists as it is quite special.
I am wishing every minute for Christmas by Lauren Child, Published by Simon & Schuster
We have loved this delightful sibling duo for 25 years! Charlie and his sister Lola have a brilliant relationship and Charlie is so patient with her, especially in this book as she waits impatiently for Christmas from September! They discover the true magic of waiting and distracting themselves with cards, decorations, skating and all sorts. All Lola wants is a toadstool so she can perch like an elf- will she get one and can she wait for Christmas? Such a gorgeous story, perfect for little Lola’s who find waiting too hard!
The Twelve Bums of Christmas by Sarah Reid and Karl West, Published by Scholastic
Any book that has “bums” in the title seems to appeal to younger readers! In this funny counting book, readers will see bums getting ready for Christmas, decorating, dancing and tooting! From one to twelve, check out the fun and chaos from elves in the North Pole but watch out when they all feast on sprouts! Gleeful and fun, this is sure to have readers chuckling away. The bold illustrations are fun and the attention to detail is fantastic. I particularly liked the glittery trousers at the dance!
