Meeting the genius Button five was an absolute honour and reading their tragic story was such an incredible weekend of reading.
Leontes Button adopted five children from around the world and created a “nature versus nurture” childhood experiment on them all. Each was allowed to choose an object when they were toddlers and from that point, the children were taught, tested and made into prodigies in that chosen field. Art, fencing, music, math, chess…and failure.
When their father is found dead after an event, the five Buttons begin to unravel and as the reader, we are party to their secrets, longings, hopes and their past indiscretions. Everything comes together in weird ways and it is an utterly compelling story of a broken family. The relationships between them are strained and tenuous but there is love there and that is what they must hold on to!
It’s such a phenomenal story and will keep you turning pages to see what happens to these child prodigies as their world collapses. I loved it. I also loved Where Sleeping Girls Lie by the same author- a truly epic writer of mystery and thriller.
