There is an author’s note at the beginning of this remarkable book and it says, “And I hope by the end, although there might be a tear twinkling in your eye, there will be a huge smile on your face”!
Well for me, it was full on ugly crying at the beauty of this story though I admit, the smiling did shine through too. I am not sure there is a more masterful weaver of stories than Sophie Anderson. Since we first met Marinka and Baba all those years ago, so many readers have fallen under the spell cast by The House with Chicken Legs.
It is wonderful to be back with House, Marinka and the fantastic cast of characters who live in the house. There are new characters to love in this sequel and an ending you won’t soon forget.
Marinka is still grieving for her Baba and House is changing- strange things are happening and Marinka can feel the fear and uncertainty in the very fabric of the house. She is as determined a girl as you will ever meet and constantly worries about her house, her actions and the impact these are having on her new life.
Promising to do whatever it takes to help House, Marinka and Benjamin find themselves in new situations that require courage and love, hellos and goodbyes! I read this in one sitting, as per normal when I am gripped tightly by a story and was both heartened and saddened at the end!
It is a striking story of love, family and grief. I challenge you to read without needing tissues. Publishing this April, I can see copies flying off shelves in bookstores and libraries!
