Anya and the Light Above the Ocean by Amelia Giudici

When I started reading this I was immediately transfixed by Anya and her missing mum, wondering about Janus and the questions Anya was being asked. The reader is catapulted into a mystery from the first page.

When Anya spots a strange light over the ocean she is compelled to it but then her memories of it disappear and she struggle home to find herself removed from all she knows while her mother’s company question her and test her.

There are elements of science fiction intermingled with philosophy and exploring our own identities. It’s powerfully written and thoroughly thought provoking, ideal for an older reader in primary school.

Is it time travel, alternate universes or something else? It would be interesting to see how readers interpret the story and their thoughts and beliefs. I found myself racing through and the short chapters are ideal to make this a class read!
