Alex Neptune, Monster Avenger

This is the third book in this series and each one gets better than the one before, or so I think anyway.

When we first met Alex, he believed the sea was trying to kill him when in actual fact, he had powers and a deep connection to the water, something his grandmother had as well.

Meeting and saving the water dragon, ancient protector of the oceans, Alex bonds closely with the creature and they work together to save the world’s oceans and seas. Along their adventures are plenty of mishaps, dangers and thrilling encounters with sea creatures, storms and pirates.

When dangerous parasites start to take over the sea creatures around Haven Bay, Alex, Zoey and Anil launch a rescue mission to protect the water dragon and her baby. This adventure is exciting and dangerous as the animals they meet are scary, possessed by parasites and even the lovely Kraken is affected. This mission is even closer to Alex’s heart as he desperately fights to safe both dragons.

The best news is that there is more to come from Alex Neptune and friends! Check out my Reasons to Read Alex Neptune, Dragon Thief as well as my review for Pirate Hunter.

Reasons to Read Alex Neptune, Dragon Thief

Friendship

Alex and Zoey have an unshakable friendship with wholehearted belief in each other, even when Zoey’s inventions are exploding and singeing eyebrows off, or when Alex refuses to get near the sea. They bouy each other up in tough times and never give up on the other. They come to rely on each other and there is a slight fear of becoming friends with others for what it will do to their dynamic.

I love their inventive personalities and ways they band together throughout the entire story.

Environmental issues

The ocean is a massive resource that is being exploited in several ways around the world and there is an overwhelming message about doing our part to keep it clean, allow sea creatures to survive and thrive and to protect areas prone to disaster. Alex and his friends understand this and want to do all they can to protect their own bay but also the greater oceans around the world.

Poaching

Raze Callis is a poacher, Hunter and all round money hungry villain. He may want to clean the world’s oceans but he will charge a pretty penny for that privilege. He is cold and calculating, ideal for children to plot against. A story with a great villain makes it all the more exciting.

Family

Alex and his family band together and learn some new facts about each other in this tale. Zoey’s dad also learns to give her a bit more credit for her inventions! Alex’s sister, weight lifting Bridget, also finds out ways of moving forward with her dreams!

Legends/myths

Haven Bay is renowned for it legends featuring BrineBlood and a water dragon. Hundreds of years ago, the water dragon’s egg was stolen by BrineBlood and the dragon reared a storm and wreaked havoc on anyone involved. Legend tells of its wrath and power. Every year, shrines and models of BrineBlood and the Water dragon are created for the celebrations. When some truths are revealed about this tale, the adventure truly begins.

Fabulous First Line

Alex Neptune begins with an epic first line. Avid readers know the impact that first line can have on readers and this is one I love!

“For as long as Alex Neptune could remember, the sea had been trying to kill him.”

Living in Haven Bay, the sea is everywhere but Alex is keen to stay as far away as possible after several terrifying incidents when he was younger. His grandmother always kept him far from the sea, just as she always stayed away as well.

Modest Main Character

Alex is a brilliant character, modest, honest and courageous-though he can’t always see this. Luckily his friend Zoey has his back, in what can only be described as a legendary heist of dragon proportions!

Exciting, environmental and full of fantastically personable sea creatures, this adventure is amazing! Check out my review for book two…
