This is a powerful story, one that highlights how the cost of living crisis is truly impacting some children in society. It is a brilliant book to showcase empathy and the need for schools to step up where they can to protect children from dealing with too much too early.
I could see this being a wonderful read aloud for a Y5 or Y6 classroom but perhaps also for a staff book club- it would serve as a huge reminder as to why noting down concerns is so vital.
Solo, is stuck dealing with the issues of his mother while trying to be a normal kid in school. Neither side of his life is easy, it’s hard to blend in when you had an odd name, a too big uniform and you have gone viral for crashing a footballer’s funeral. Solo has to navigate all of this, at only 10 years old!
You can’t help but want to do something as you read. I wanted to help Solo, give him meals, a proper uniform and a giant hug- just to let him know that everything would be ok! I think children hearing or reading this story will feel compelled to be kinder, more helpful and better at noticing any problems with friends.
