What a marvellous story! I was transported back in time to a small London theatre, the centre of Charley Wren’s world. She and Dad, Toby own the Wren theatre and treat their audience, acts and crew as family, all sharing the spotlight and takings each night.
When Toby is called away, Aunt Constance arrives and is a dour woman with no sense of humour or style. Within days, Charley is sent to a vile boarding school run by thieves. She is a determined young girl and has the sole focus of saving her family’s theatre from ruin in her absence.
Making some bold decisions and meeting new friends along the way, Charley makes her way back to London, only to find the theatre dark and empty. Bereft and feeling betrayed, Charley takes stock of her world and still comes to the same conclusion- she must save her theatre.
In a whirlwind ending, Charley is swept away by some long lost secrets and puts an amazing plan together to try to save the Wren.
I loved this story and Charley is a delightful character, one who is relatable and courageous, loyal and loving. I found myself running alongside her, willing the truth to emerge and a happy ending to be found.
