I have been pondering the title of this blog for a long time and in recent conversations, the ideas of blogs keep popping up! Now, because I am locked into this blog for another year, I am not giving it up but I do question the readership of blogs.
When I began blogging (in 2017-such a long time ago) it was a novel approach to sharing thoughts, reviews, recommendations…but now are they too long for the shortened attention spans of the reader? With the introduction of Book Tok, Reels and Stories, do book people want more for less? More images, more videos, more talking and less text for less time?!
I check my monthly stats and see which blogs are read most (some surprising) but I don’t compare with other bloggers- more because I am terrified that my stats are lower than low, proving that blogs are becoming obsolete. I am not sure I am ready to admit defeat- just yet!
Also playing on my mind is the quantity of blog posts- how many are too few or too many? Daily, weekly, bi-monthly? Due to extreme work, family and volunteer commitments, I find time slips by and it’s suddenly been a week or longer since I shared thoughts on books.
I am reading every day and writing my reviews but days pass and I have not posted anything- does it matter? I still feel a welcome part of the blogger, reviewer, (dare I say it- influencer) community but what is the expectation?
In chatting with others, I realise many of us have similar thoughts…so helpful to alleviate the guilt and curiosity of blogging.
Anyway, thanks for sticking with this blog to get through to the end! Perhaps blogs are not quite ready to retire just yet!
This is a question I come down to from time to time; more so in the last couple of years. Has to do with getting older, I guess. But then I think about why I wanted to blog in the first place and do those reasons still apply? The main reason I started (way back in 2009 or so.) I wanted to talk about childrens books. Something I am endlessly passionate about. Something I have A LOT of knowledge about accumulated over decades. I could talk for hours about kidslit and blogging gives me a voice; a place where people can read it or not, at their choice. But it’s out there. I don’t worry about stats, because I’m not interested in introducing an element of “competitiveness” into my life. I’m not interested in it all be flashy and shiny…I just want to do it. It gives me pleasure. And so, I keep blogging. Yes, one day I will stop…when it no longer makes me happy or no longer serves a purpose. But for now.
By the way, I enjoy your blog…for whatever that’s worth.

A really interesting post and one that I share many of the sentiments of. I always enjoy reading your blog. I think I’m always surprised that my blog continues to get traffic in this fast past, disposable content climate. It just makes me wondered that there are still a few more of ‘me’ out there – clinging onto the slower pace of life.
